Goodness! A month has gone by since my last post, but to be fair, the weeks at the end of December and the beginning of January are a little full of family and celebration. Not to mention putting decorations up and taking them down again.
Anyway. We had a wee bit of proper winter just briefly at the end of last week, so our regular walk round Birnie and Gaddon Lochs was brightened by low sun on snow and frozen water. Just beautiful, and a fitting display for the day in which my wee baby daughter turned 40. Forty! Aaargggh.
My grandchildren are all teenagers and my kids are both in their forties. I guess I have to stop pretending I'm only middle-aged.
Nevertheless, it was a lovely day for a walk, and we had a splendid meal out in the evening with the birthday girl and family. We ventured to a wee bistro up one of the little closes (wynds, pends, vennels - to translate) in Cupar - The Courtyard Bistro. A lovely wee place with a very intimate atmosphere - it probably only seats a couple of dozen people. The food is sort of mediterranean influenced but seasonal and local, and it's not trying so hard to be posh that it forgets to give you enough carbs with your meat - so you feel you've had a proper meal.
The chef was also perfectly unfazed by the possibility that the youngest member of the party might not want anything too gussied-up. He was perfectly happy to do a plain piece of chicken, pork or fish should the young man in question require it. In the event though, Most Excellent Grandson tried a rib-eye steak for the first time and pronounced it good.
